What Is Keto?

The keto diet is a low-carb, moderate-protein, and high-fat diet. The goal of the diet is to get your body into
ketosis—a metabolic state which prioritizes fat as your energy source.

Why Do Away With Carbohydrates

When you eat something high in carbohydrates, your body will produce glucose and insulin. Glucose is the easiest molecule for your body to convert and use as energy. Therefore, your body will always choose it over other energy sources when it is in abundance. Insulin, meanwhile, is produced to process the glucose in your bloodstream by taking it around
your body.

Typically on a normal, higher-carbohydrate diet, the body will use glucose as the main source of energy. Your fats are not needed to fuel your day-to-day activities and are then stored.

What Is Ketosis?

Ketosis is a natural process that the body initiates to help us survive when food intake is low. It also occurs when your body has run out of its glycogen (sugar) stores, so it needs to find another source of fuel. When you are in ketosis, your liver begins to produce ketones by breaking down fat. These ketones then become your body’s main fuel source.

The end goal of a properly maintained keto diet is to force your body into ketosis not through starvation
but through the absence of carbohydrates.

The Benefits of a Keto Diet

Many other types of diets only really have a single benefit—weight loss. On the other hand, keto has numerous benefits because of how it changes your body’s chemistry. Optimal ketone levels offer many health, weight loss, and physical and mental benefits.

Weight Loss

On the keto diet, your fat cells release the water they have been retaining. The fat cells then become small enough to enter the bloodstream and enter the liver where they can be converted into ketones.

Appetite Control

When your diet is not carb heavy, you find that you are not as hungry as often. You also do away with the random cravings that have you eating bad food.

Better Mental Focus

Utilizing carbohydrates as your main energy source, your blood sugar levels will rise and fall. It becomes harder for your brain to stay focused for long periods of time because you lack a consistent source of energy.

When you are in ketosis, your brain uses ketones as a fuel source. Your brain will then have a consistent fuel source—the ketones your liver produces from dietary and body fat—so you can focus for longer periods of time.

More Energy

Since your body can only store so much glycogen, you need to constantly refuel if you want to maintain your energy levels. Your body already has plenty of fat to work with, and it can store more fat. Therefore, you will never run out of an energy source when you are in ketosis.

Helps Fight Type 2 Diabetes

Those who suffer from type 2 diabetes suffer from an increased production of insulin. By eliminating sugars by following the keto diet, you lower the HbA1c count and can effectively reverse type 2 diabetes.

Increases Levels of HDL Cholesterol

On the keto diet, the level of triglycerides in your body decreases while your HDL levels increase. HDL is the good cholesterol that carries cholesterol away from the body and into the liver where it can be reused or excreted.
